What it is

A giant printer extrudes layers of mortar with fibre and construction waste to raise the walls of several houses in a day. It saves formwork, time and rubble, though roofing, services and finishes remain manual.

Contour Crafting (Behrokh Khoshnevis, USC, 1990s) and D-Shape (Enrico Dini, 2000s) precede it; the 10 houses of 2014 are a milestone of scale, though independent verification has been questioned.

What it led to

  • printed houses and buildings in the Netherlands, UAE, US and elsewhere
  • concrete extruders and building-site robots
  • affordable homes built quickly
