What it is
A line of more than 1,400 km joining Yunnan's dams with Guangdong at ±800 kV. They were the first commercial ultra-high-voltage direct-current lines.
The Yunnan-Guangdong link entered service in stages between December 2009 and June 2010 and Xiangjiaba-Shanghai in July 2010; which was 'first' depends on definition.
What it led to
- the ±1,100 kV Changji-Guquan line (2019)
- hydropower transmission over thousands of kilometres
- ultra-high-voltage grids in India and Brazil
