⚠️ Disputed: the sources disagree.
What it is
Sasanian centre of medical teaching and translation where Greek, Syriac and Indian medicine coexisted. Its physicians (the Bukhtishu family) carried the clinical tradition to Baghdad.
Almost everything known about it comes from late Arabic sources; historians such as M. Dols and P. Pormann believe its role as a great academy-hospital is exaggerated.
What it led to
- transmission of Galen and Hippocrates to the Islamic world
- court physicians of the Abbasids (Bukhtishu)
- the bimaristan model
