What was discovered
Amagat's law (or the law of partial volumes) describes the behavior of mixtures of ideal gases, and some cases of non-ideal gases: the volume of a mixture of ideal gases equals the sum of the volumes each component gas would occupy separately, at the same pressure and temperature. It was formulated by French physicist Émile Amagat.
What it led to
- Complementary tool to Dalton's law in the thermodynamics of gas mixtures
- Application in chemical engineering and the natural-gas industry
- Basis for studying deviations from ideality in real mixtures
