What it is
Anesthesiologist Virginia Apgar designed a standardized method to assess a newborn's health right after birth, scoring color, pulse, reflex response, muscle tone and breathing, given the lack of a uniform protocol for deciding which babies needed help breathing. Presented in 1952 and published in 1953, it was validated in 1955 with data from more than 15,000 newborns.
What it led to
- Worldwide standard protocol for immediate neonatal assessment
- Statistical validation with more than 15,000 newborns (1955)
