What it is
Villepreux-Power built glass containers to observe living marine animals, such as argonauts, over time. Warington (1850) explained the biological balance with plants, and Gosse (1853) opened the first public aquarium.
The term 'aquarium' was coined by Philip Henry Gosse in 1854; Gosse's public aquarium at London Zoo (1853) was the first open to the public.
