What it is
A 7-inch laptop with flash storage and Linux, sold in 2007 for under US$400, which created the netbook category. It brought computing to a very budget-conscious public and set off the fight over the cheap laptop.
The name 'netbook' had been used earlier by Psion (1999), and the OLPC project (2005) paved the way for the low-cost laptop. The Eee PC 701 was shown at Computex 2007 and went on sale in October that year.
What it led to
- the 2008-2010 netbook boom
- Chromebooks and cheap educational laptops
- pressure on Microsoft and on laptop makers
