What it is

Approximately equal-area world map projection, made by dividing the sphere into 96 triangles transferred to a tetrahedron and unfolded into a rectangle, greatly reducing the distortion of continents and oceans compared with Mercator.

What it led to

  • adoption as an official map in Japanese textbooks
  • United Nations logo based on the projection
  • equal-area alternatives to Mercator for education
  • more accurate representation of Antarctica
