What was discovered
The Babcock model is a proposed mechanism explaining the magnetic and sunspot patterns observed on the Sun, in particular its eleven-year activity cycle, through the winding and reconnection of solar magnetic field lines. It was formulated by astronomer Horace W. Babcock.
What it led to
- Reference framework for understanding the sunspot cycle
- Basis of later solar-dynamo models
- Influence on solar-activity and space-weather prediction
