What it is
A direct-positive process on paper sensitized with silver salts, darkened by exposure and then bleached. With it Bayard made the first public exhibition of photographs, in Paris in 1839.
The French state funded Daguerre and not Bayard, who protested with his Self-Portrait as a Drowned Man (1840).
What it led to
- the first photographic exhibition (24 June 1839)
- the self-portrait as a drowned man, the first staged photograph
- the idea of unique paper positives
