What it is
A hollow rivet with a mandrel that, when pulled with a hand riveter, deforms the blind end and clamps it. It is fitted from one side only, so it is suitable for sheet metal and structures without access to the back.
Cherry invented the blind rivet in 1936 for aircraft; Louis Huck developed the Huck rivet in 1940, and other one-sided rivet patents are earlier. Attribution varies by source.
What it led to
- joining of aircraft, automobile and appliance sheet
- hand and pneumatic riveters
- light aluminium structures
