What was discovered
The GSI obtained five atoms of Bh-262 by cold fusion of chromium-54 with bismuth-209 in the UNILAC accelerator, using the SHIP separator.
Dubna had claimed it in 1976; the IUPAC recognised the GSI.
What it led to
- Establishment of cold fusion as a method for superheavy elements
- Germany's entry into the elements race
- Chemistry of bohrium as a rhenium homologue
Built on
- UNILAC accelerator
- Oganessian's cold fusion method
Made possible
- SHIP recoil separator
