What it is
A glass made mainly of silica and boron trioxide, with a very low thermal expansion coefficient that makes it highly resistant to thermal shock and breakage from sudden temperature changes.
Developed by glass chemist and engineer Otto Schott in Jena; sold under brands such as Duran, Pyrex and Schott.
What it led to
- Much safer laboratory glassware (flasks, reagent bottles)
- Thermal-shock-resistant kitchenware and bakeware (Pyrex, Duran)
Built on
- Soda-lime glass
