What was discovered
The Khandakhadyaka interpolates values from sine tables using second differences, a formula equivalent to second-order Newton-Stirling interpolation. It improved the accuracy of planetary calculations.
In Europe, interpolation by finite differences was developed in the 17th century (Harriot, Briggs, Newton).
What it led to
- more accurate astronomical tables
- numerical methods of the Kerala school
