What was discovered
Bravais mathematically classified all possible arrangements of points regularly distributed with the same translational symmetry: 5 lattices in the plane and 14 in three-dimensional space, the geometric scaffolding of every crystal.
The Wikidata candidate gave 1848; Bravais's original paper, "Mémoire sur les systèmes formés par les points distribués régulièrement sur un plan ou dans l'espace", was published in 1850.
What it led to
- Classification of the 230 space groups of crystallography
- Determination of crystal structures by X-ray diffraction
- Modern solid-state physics
