What it is
Brayton patented a constant-pressure continuous-combustion engine, his 'Ready Motor', with compressor, combustion chamber and expansion. Its thermodynamic cycle is that of gas turbines and turbojets.
The cycle is sometimes called the Joule cycle; Brayton applied it to piston engines fuelled with petroleum, not to turbines.
What it led to
- the theoretical basis for gas turbines
- turbojets and turbofans
- combined-cycle power plants
