What was discovered
A dimensional-analysis theorem that allows a physical equation with n variables to be rewritten as a relation among p = n − k dimensionless parameters, formalizing Rayleigh's method.
The common name (Vaschy-Buckingham) does not match the person given by Wikidata (Bertrand); several independent earlier formulations exist (Bertrand 1878, Vaschy 1892, Buckingham 1914).
What it led to
- Scale modeling in engineering (wind tunnels, hydraulics)
- Dimensionless analysis in fluid mechanics
- Experimental design in physics and engineering
- Normalization of physical equations
