What it is
An electric underground line between Plaza de Mayo and Plaza Miserere opened on 1 December 1913, the first metro in Latin America, the Southern Hemisphere and the Spanish-speaking world. Its 1913 Brugeoise wooden cars ran for more than a century.
Madrid (1919) opened later; the first metro in Asia was Tokyo's (1927).
What it led to
- metro networks across Latin America: Mexico City, Santiago, Caracas, São Paulo
