What it is
The first topographic map of an entire kingdom based on a geodetic triangulation network: 181 sheets at 1:86,400 covering all of France. It set the model of national triangulation mapping that other European states would follow.
The project began with the 1733-1744 triangulation and the first sheet was published in 1756; the work was completed in 1789 by J. D. Cassini after his father's death.
What it led to
- national mapping agencies such as the Ordnance Survey
- the basis of the French General Staff map and cadastre
