What it is
A line that climbs from Lima to the Ticlio pass (4,818 m) through switchbacks, tunnels and bridges. It was the highest railway in the world until the Qinghai–Tibet line opened, and it let the central highlands export their ore.
Works began in 1870; the line reached La Oroya in 1893 after interruptions caused by the financial crisis and the War of the Pacific. Ticlio is the summit of the main line.
What it led to
- Export of the Cerro de Pasco mining output
- High-mountain railway engineering
- Integration of the central highlands with the coast
