What it is
A technique that stretches a short laser pulse in time, amplifies it without damaging the medium and recompresses it, reaching intensities previously impossible. Strickland and Mourou received the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics.
Part of the idea comes from chirped-pulse radar (1950s).
What it led to
- petawatt lasers for strong-field physics
- femtosecond laser eye surgery
- laser particle accelerators
