What it is
A spherical sweet on a stick, conceived by Enric Bernat as a treat that would not dirty children's hands. It was sold from 1958 as Chups and from 1961 as Chupa Chups, and Salvador Dalí designed its logo in 1969.
Stick sweets already existed (Dum-Dums by Akron Candy, 1924; US lollipop patents of 1908-1931); Bernat's novelty is the product and brand conceived for children. The attribution as an “invention” is commercial, not technical. The date of Dalí's logo (1968-1969) varies by source.
What it led to
- an international brand of lollipops
- the worldwide popularisation of the stick sweet as a mass-market product
- Dalí's logo, an early example of brand design by an artist
