What it is
Schaefer, a General Electric chemist, dropped 2.5 kg of dry ice from a small plane onto a supercooled cloud near Mount Greylock and made it snow, the first successful field test of weather modification. His colleague Bernard Vonnegut developed an alternative method using silver iodide at almost the same time.
What it led to
- Operational adoption of dry-ice and silver-iodide seeding
- Weather modification programs worldwide
Built on
- Bergeron-Findeisen process (1930s)
