What it is
A bifacial spear point with a basal flute struck off by percussion or pressure to haft it to the shaft. It is the first stone-tool technology to spread across almost all of North America within just a few centuries.
An Indigenous contribution. The fluting technique is an American innovation with no clear parallel in Siberia.
What it led to
- megafauna hunting (mammoth, ancient bison)
- later fluted-point traditions (Folsom)
- debate over the extinction of American megafauna
