What it is
Created in 1849 with mining engineers, the Commission began the geological survey of Spain; its results include the geological map of Madrid (1864) and that of Spain (1889). It is the origin of today's Geological and Mining Institute of Spain.
The Commission went through several names and reorganisations (Junta General de Estadística, Comisión del Mapa Geológico, Instituto Geológico de España in 1910). Guillermo Schulz had already mapped Asturias (1858) on an official commission.
What it led to
- national geological mapping of Spain
- geological description of the Peninsula (Prado, Schulz, Mallada)
- basis of the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain
