What it is
A three-lens objective, two converging and a diverging one in the centre, with which Taylor corrected the seven Seidel aberrations with few degrees of freedom. It is the basic scheme of many inexpensive photographic lenses.
Taylor patented the triplet in 1893; Cooke manufactured it from 1894. Rudolph (Zeiss) produced the Protar Anastigmat in 1890 and the Tessar in 1902, with the same aim of eliminating astigmatism.
What it led to
- Tessar, Heliar and derived lenses
- good mid-range amateur cameras
- optical design by numerical calculation
