What it is
A glass tube of mercury vapour in which a bluish-green arc glows with much higher efficacy than a filament. Its redless light served photography and workshops, and paved the way for discharge lamps.
What it led to
- mercury-vapour lamps for industrial and street lighting
- the fluorescent lamp, which coats a mercury tube with phosphors
- the mercury-arc rectifier (Cooper Hewitt, 1902)
