What was discovered
Transition metals possess a secondary valence that fixes a number of ligands in defined geometries (octahedral, square planar); Werner demonstrated the optical isomerism of carbon-free complexes. He founds modern inorganic chemistry.
Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1913, the first inorganic chemist to be awarded it.
What it led to
- Organometallic chemistry
- Homogeneous catalysis
- Bioinorganic chemistry (haemoglobin, chlorophyll)
- Platinum drugs
Built on
- Van't Hoff's stereochemistry
- Blomstrand-Jorgensen salts
Made possible
- cisplatin
- transition-metal catalysts
