What was discovered
Mojica discovered in the archaeon Haloferax spaced repeats whose spacers match viruses, and proposed that they form an immune memory; Barrangou proved it in Streptococcus thermophilus.
Mojica coined the acronym CRISPR in 2001.
What it led to
- the CRISPR-Cas9 editing tool
- understanding of phage-bacteria coevolution
- a dairy industry resistant to phages
