What it is
A cryptanalysis technique studying how differences between pairs of input texts propagate through a cipher, to detect non-random behavior and recover the secret key; developed by Biham and Shamir against DES.
What it led to
- the first practical theoretical attack against the DES standard
- redesign of later ciphers to resist differential cryptanalysis
- influence on the design of AES and other block ciphers
- extension to stream ciphers and hash functions
