What was discovered
The Songji-3 well was the first of a large continental oil field in the Songliao basin. It refuted the claim that China lacked oil and made the country self-sufficient in crude.
The discovery was announced in 1959 and commercial production began in 1960; the continental theory is due to Li Siguang.
