What it is
Tired of her servants chipping the family's china while washing it, Cochrane designed and built in her own shed a machine that held plates in wire racks while a motor-driven jet of pressurized water cleaned them. She patented it in 1886.
Before it reached homes, her first customers were hotels and restaurants.
What it led to
- Presentation at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago
- Founding of the company that would become KitchenAid
- Mass adoption of the household dishwasher in the 20th century
