What was discovered
Experiments on goats and divers aboard HMS Spanker showed that ascent is safe if pressure is reduced in stages once tissues reach half their nitrogen load. They produced the first Royal Navy decompression tables.
Decompression sickness was described earlier by Paul Bert (1878); Haldane supplied the tissue model and staged decompression.
What it led to
- US Navy decompression tables
- reduced decompression sickness
- deep diving with breathing mixtures
