What it is
A marine propeller shrouded by a non-rotating, hydrodynamically shaped nozzle that improves its efficiency, first developed by Luigi Stipa in 1931 and refined by Ludwig Kort in 1934.
What it led to
- improved efficiency for tugboats and heavily loaded vessels
- became standard propulsion for fishing boats and tugs
- the basis for the Kort nozzles used in today's merchant marine
