What it is
A cell using a dye on nanoporous titanium dioxide to absorb light and an electrolyte to close the circuit, with 7% efficiency when presented. It opened the way to low-cost solar cells made from simple materials.
It was published in Nature in 1991; the 2009 perovskite cells began as a variant of this concept.
What it led to
- photovoltaic perovskites
- cheaply made solar cells
- research into artificial photosynthesis
