What it is
Fraze, an engineer who found himself without an opener at a picnic, devised an aluminium lid with a scored strip and ring that opens without tools. It was first used commercially in 1962 on beer cans.
He invented the ring pull around 1959, patented it in 1963, and Daniel Cudzik's stay-on tab replaced it in 1975.
What it led to
- universal easy-open beverage cans
- pull-tab litter and its replacement by the stay-on tab (1975)
- the boom of the aluminium can for soft drinks and beer
