What it is
Discovery that a changing magnetic field generates current in a circuit. It is the principle behind generators and transformers: the way to obtain electricity from mechanical motion.
Henry observed self-induction in Albany in 1830-1832 but published after Faraday.
What it led to
- Electricity generation on an industrial scale
- Maxwell's equations (1865) and electromagnetic theory
- Transformers and alternating-current networks
- Telephony and induction in communications
- Electric generator (dynamo) and transformer
- The Faraday-Lenz law and Maxwell's equations
- The electrical industry and electrification
- The concept of field
