What it is
In 1903 Elling built a gas turbine with a compressor and water cooling that produced more power than the compressor consumed. It was the first gas turbine with net output.
Its output was about 8 hp and its efficiency low; the first practical gas turbine arrived in the late 1930s.
What it led to
- industrial gas turbines
- turbojets
- proof of the viability of the open cycle
