What was discovered
Convinced that light was an electromagnetic phenomenon, Faraday tested a "heavy" glass of his own manufacture and observed that a magnetic field rotated the polarization plane of light passing through it, the first experimental proof of a link between light and magnetism.
What it led to
- Experimental basis for Maxwell's electromagnetic theory of light
- Optical isolators and current sensors based on Faraday rotation
