What it is
Faure replaced the slow electrochemical formation of lead plates with a lead-oxide paste applied directly. This gave the lead-acid battery more capacity and made mass production possible.
The American Charles Brush developed a similar process almost simultaneously, and there was a patent suit between their supporters. Faure patented in 1880 and presented in 1881.
What it led to
- industrial manufacture of accumulators
- battery-powered traction (trams and cars of the 1890s)
- storage in power stations and emergency lighting
