What was discovered
Ferranti designed a station on the Thames that sent alternating current at 10,000 V through high-voltage cables to central London, 11 km away. It was the first large-scale high-voltage AC system with transformers at the point of use.
What it led to
- large-scale high-voltage power station in Britain
- paper-insulated cables
- standardisation of grid voltage
