What it is
A Benoist flying-boat service between St. Petersburg and Tampa that began on 1 January 1914 with paid tickets and a fixed schedule. It was the world's first regular commercial airline using aeroplanes, though it lasted only four months.
The DELAG airship line had operated in Germany since 1909-1910; the Florida line is the first with fixed-wing aeroplanes. The first passenger paid $400 at auction.
What it led to
- model for scheduled airlines after the First World War
- the commercial air ticket at market price
