What it is

Linnett patented the "kineograph", a booklet of images that change gradually from page to page and, when flipped quickly, simulate motion. It was the first animation based on a linear sequence rather than the circular designs of earlier optical toys.

The Wikidata candidate gave the name "John Linett Barnes" and the year 1860; the correct name is John Barnes Linnett and the patent dates from 1868. Pierre-Hubert Desvignes, also cited by Wikidata, does not appear as a co-author in the sources consulted.

What it led to

  • Flip-through animation optical toys
  • Conceptual precursor of frame-by-frame animation
  • Late 19th-century mutoscopes
