What it is
A French patent for a portable pen with an ink reservoir fed by a tube of bird feathers, which did not need dipping. It is the first patented model of fountain pen.
Poenaru, a Romanian, patented the pen in Paris on 25 May 1827; reservoir pens existed earlier (al-Mu'izz, 953), but unpatented.
What it led to
- writing without dipping the pen
- Waterman's capillary-feed models
- mass-produced fountain pens of the 20th century
