What was discovered
Friedmann derived from Einstein's field equations a set of equations describing the expansion or contraction of a homogeneous, isotropic universe, laying the mathematical foundation of modern cosmology.
Einstein initially dismissed Friedmann's result as mistaken, and only accepted it after Hubble's observations of the expanding universe in 1929; Friedmann had already died in 1925.
What it led to
- FLRW (Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker) cosmological models
- Standard Lambda-CDM cosmological model
- Einstein's later acceptance after Hubble's observational confirmation
