What it is
A bronze type font cast in 1434 by order of King Sejong, with more regular sorts and a forme that holds them with bamboo wedges instead of wax. According to the chronicles it doubled the number of pages printed per day.
Earlier fonts (Gyemi, 1403; Gyeongja, 1420) fixed the type with beeswax; Gabinja fixes it with bamboo wedges. The doubling figure comes from the Sejong Sillok.
What it led to
- official printing of agronomy, medicine, history and classics in metal type
- technical refinement of Korean type founding (Gyeongja and Gabin fonts)
- printing infrastructure for Sejong's cultural policy
