What it is
American engineer Henry Gantt popularized around 1910-1915 a horizontal bar chart for visualizing the scheduling and progress of tasks over time, today a standard project management tool; Polish engineer Karol Adamiecki had independently developed an equivalent chart, the 'harmonogram', as early as 1896.
Adamiecki published his harmonogram only in Polish and Russian, which limited its spread and recognition of his authorship compared to Gantt's, disseminated in English.
What it led to
- standardization of visual project planning
- the basis of modern project management software
- widespread adoption in construction, industry and software development
