What it is
A royal workshop that brought weavers, dyers and painters under one roof to produce high-warp tapestries and furnishings for the State. It set the model of the state luxury manufactory and of tapestry woven from painted cartoons.
The Gobelins site was a private dye works from the 15th century; in 1662 Colbert made it a royal manufactory. It is an institution rather than a technical invention. Earlier tapestry: Flanders and Arras.
What it led to
- large-format tapestry in the service of royal power
