What it is
Embrapa developed a common bean that silences, through RNA interference, the replication gene of the golden mosaic virus (carried by whitefly), one of its most serious pests. In 2011 CTNBio approved the variety BRS FC401 RMD, the first transgenic food crop created by a Brazilian public institution.
Bean is a Brazilian staple. CTNBio approval dates from September 2011; commercial adoption has been limited.
What it led to
- virus control in legumes without insecticide against the whitefly
- application of RNA interference to agriculture in the Global South
- public agricultural biotechnology capacity in Brazil
