What it is
In 1963-64 patents Nishizawa proposes communicating with semiconductor light through a glass fibre with a graded refractive index. It was the first proposal of graded-index fibre for communications.
Kao and Hockham (1966) gave the key of low loss through glass purity and received the 2009 Nobel Prize; Nishizawa's earlier contribution is little recognised outside Japan.
What it led to
- graded-index fibres of the 1970s
- Japanese optical communication systems
- semiconductor laser plus fibre
